706- Research for Practice
706 learning outcomes:
CLO1 Research - Create specialised work outputs, which are informed by current practice, research and scholarship.
CLO3 Subject Knowledge - Evidence an in-depth knowledge and understanding of your specialist, subject and professional practice, including that of contemporary critical and conceptual debate, and practical developments.
CLO4 Experimentation - Experiment with techniques, ideas and approaches to advance your specialist, subject and professional practice.
CLO5 Techniques and Processes - Choose, apply and evaluate a range of techniques and processes appropriate to your practice.
Briefing notes:
- Building community, making, conceptualising.
- Using materiality and critical thinking.
- Create practical work. Develop a portfolio that shows how you practice in detail.
- Develop in-depth knowledge.
- Engagement with information and media. (Weekly updates within field?)
- Consider the relationship between theory and your practice.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Imaginative exchange of concepts and ideas.
- Displaying self-management. How do you work? How does this impact what you make and do?
- Testing, experimenting, investigating. How do you engage with materials?
- Understand your practice in the wider context. How is it part of other disciplines? Where does it sit amongst others?
- Debate. Challenge what you do. Current and contemporary; sustainability, accessibility, inclusivity, etc.
- Is the craft inclusive? Discuss the lack of diversity. Lack of opportunities in a disappearing craft.
- Critical friend - a mentor, someone who gives practical advise and passes on knowledge, e.g. Mike at York Bookbinding. Could say ‘in conversation with my critical friend, I was advised to…’
Weekly readings:
- Research interests.
- Themes and ideas for new thought waves within practice.
- Academic literature to inject into your thinking within practice.
- Discussions and debates to develop a community space.
- Getting use to academic language.
- Springboard for research.
Researching:
- Primary; in person investigations. Tactile observations. Physical and immersive.
- Secondary; academic texts and online searches.
- Keep it up to date; recent sources.
- At least 5 artists within portfolio.
Submissions
Digital portfolio:
- Document your process, materials, tools, methods, techniques, reception, audience.
- Test, write, create.
- Do this as you go along your journey, working towards your goals.
- Employability check ins.
- To be a Powerpoint of around 30-35 slides.
- Document evidence with annotation, being informative and descriptive.
- Show research of at least 5 artists.
Research proposal:
- 1-2 pages between 500-1000 words.
- Road map to your Creative Practice journey.
- Establishment. What are your goals, where are you going, what do you hope to achieve?
- What will you do in this time on your MA?
- At least 5 sources (books/journals/papers/websites), Harvard Referenced.
Reflective summary:
- 1-3 pages of reflections between 500 and 1500 words.
- What do you think about this term? Writing a letter of reflection to yourself.
- Consider the turning points of the project, the crucial moments.
- At least 5 sources (books/journals/papers/websites), Harvard Referenced.
