Weekly Bookbinding Report: sawing, drilling and stitch practice
Week two as an apprentice bookbinder at York Bookbinding
Week two entailed learning to use the saw in bookbinding. This was for side stitch, which the saw is used for string enforcement, and for making holes for coptic stitch. I also did a lot of sewing; learning the side stitch and practicing coptic and kettle stitch. I had a go at using the drill too, in order to put holes straight through the pages for side stitching.
Week two accomplishments:
- Learnt how to do side stitch using a drill.
- Practiced different stitches.
- Learnt and practiced sawing for bookbinding.
- Sewed up two live books.
- Successfully used the weaver's knot.
- Applying ribbon, headbands and calico.
New skills acquired during week two:
- Sawing spine and applying string reinforcement.
- Using a drill to make holes for sewing.
- Using a saw to make holes for sewing.
What I need to improve on:
- Using the saw - making sure I apply even pressure.
- Sewing pace - become faster with practice.
