Weekly Bookbinding Report: type, foiling & independent working

Week three as an apprentice bookbinder at York Bookbinding

Week three entailed practicing what I had learnt so far, and introducing type and foiling. I bound the inners of a live book on the cradle with coptic and kettle stitch, bound another using side stitch with use of the drill, and learnt about foiling and type, managing to foil the cover of a notebook I am in the process of making.

Week three accomplishments:
  • Independently carried out tasks on live work, side side stitching with use of drill.
  • Improved sawing, knots and sewing.
  • Successfully used the weavers knot with no problems.
  • Sewing at a faster pace.
  • Learnt about type and foiling.

New skills acquired during week three:
  • Putting away type.
  • Setting up type for foiling.
  • Using the hand foiler.

What I need to improve on:
  • Sawing skills. Still need gain better understanding of depth.
  • Foiling; need to practice how to achieve good quality foiling.
  • Setting up type so that it is in the correct order.
