Workshop with Iona Jackson

Making zines using simple cutting and folding methods

Iona showed us some simple methods that create the pages of a book. We folded the paper in different ways and cut at different points to make two types of zines; pamphlet fold and concertina fold. Show showed us different uses for them, for example one of them could be made to have pockets.

"What is your practice? What do you want to do with your own work?"

Personal notes from the workshop:
Improving accessibility through all senses. Reinventing books. Pushing progress of book design into more tactile. Oppose the blank cold surface of technology. Power to tactility and multi media. The skeletal bones of a book needs to be shaken.

Books under threat due to digital age, environmental factors and economical factors.

Idea - storytelling, inspired by reading women who run with the wolves, and experimenting with the book form by integrating cut outs and interactive elements into the design to create a puppet theatre.

Making a book/zine
I took one of the books Iona showed us how to make and started cutting into it and playing with the pieces. I used glue and tape to stick elements onto pages and create more dimension.
