Weekly Bookbinding Report: big book blocks & Tabernacles

Week thirteen as an apprentice bookbinder at York Bookbinding

This week at York Bookbinding I worked one day, in which I managed to complete last weeks unfinished bindings, and make up some cases.

This weeks accomplishments:
  • Side sew three books.
  • Make eight Tabernacle cases from precept board and cloth.
  • Fixing mistakes, still resulting in a successful finish.

New skills acquired this week:
  • Fixing mistakes - I wasn't supposed to glue and thread support the book as it is too large and needs to be drilled first. This allows the book to be drilled in two bouts, as the drill cannot get all the way through the large block. I was to pad the book block (just apply glue), then drill (slicing through the padding to drill the second half), then saw and glue in the support string, then sew.
  • Not a new skill, but it was useful to practice making up cases.
  • Making Tabernacle cases.

What I need to improve on:
Accuracy of cut edges for corners of case making. Don't rely on the corner cutter tool to do a perfect job!

Notes of the week:
Always note down timings so that the job can be priced accordingly and so that one can keep track of progress !
