HGFT Shop flyers
Flyer designing and printing for Harrogate Fairtrade Shop
HGFT Shop in Harrogate is a small shop that sells Fairtrade products such as accessories, toys, food & drink, cards, and other things. I have volunteered as an assistant in the shop for a few years, which I really enjoyed but had to stop due to life circumstances. Now I have started designing and printing flyers for them, which is even better.
They are members of BAFTS, which is the UK network of fair trade shops and suppliers, and as HGFT put it; "this means we can say, “we know the person who knows the person who made that!” about most of our products." This is something I really love about the shop; "everything we sell has a story behind it, of people whose lives have been changed," and these flyers are a way of sharing each story.
Each month HGFT send out a newsletter that shares the story behind a product(s) to give customers some of the wonderful information about what happens behind the scenes of it being made. My job is to take the writing from the newsletter and design the flyer, as well as print it on the risograph printer (as discussed with the manager of the shop). Using the risograph printer will be cost effective and bring a great pop of colour to the print, as well as being the more eco-friendly option with soy based inks, and very quick to do (much faster than screen printing for example).
1. From banana plant to beautiful scarf
The first flyer design was in response to a newsletter focusing on a scarf made from banana fibre to create the textile of the scarf. I chose to Illustrate a banana, a scarf, and the leaves of the banana plant.
I printed the illustration in yellow (because banana) then the text in black on top. For this first design I did the logo and shop information in yellow, however it is hard to read so the next designs will have this in black. Me and Vicky also discussed the readability of the text and how it can be improved. We decided that she would try to write a little less so that I can improve the typesetting for better readability.
2.The future of chocolate depends on the choices we make
This flyer is being released in the easter period, so the writing is chocolate focused. We discussed that the design should have a hint of easter but not too overpowering. I illustrated cocoa beans, the fair-trade symbol, an Easter egg then a heart as a cycle. I also wanted to create more balance on the page so highlighted some words in the title; 'chocolate' & 'choices', to hint to the consumer that their choices make a difference. I changed the shop information to black and Vicky also asked that I add a QR code for people to sign up to the monthly newsletter, which I managed to squeeze in.

This design is about Zuri Designs who make cards from recycled materials. They work with Paper Craft who are a co-op that provides work for socially and economically disadvantaged people, and especially women with families who struggle to make a living and raise a family at the same time. They work around family commitments to ensure that peoples lives are looked after. I thought this was particularly touching and combines this aspect of family with paper craft activities, such as making a paper people chain. I illustrated this but had it be both young and old in the chain to bring in that family element.
I wasn't sure if this would be enough so I also illustrated hands cutting a heart out of paper. I showed the designs I had to a few people and in the end me and Vicky decided on the more simple paper people chain.
Instead of a QR code, Vicky wanted to put a simple URL where people can sign up for the newsletter. So I added this and then put a coloured box under to highlight it. This also breaks up the page a bit for a more balanced and satisfying design outcome.
