Photozine with Teo Tsisme

The Photobook Club:
The Photobook Club at LAU is a collective formed of photographers and graphic designers who work together to share and create phonebooks/publications.

The brief:
The brief for this project is working towards Barnsley Zine Fair where the collective will have a table to present work made.
The brief is to work with a photographer to design and print a photozine. It should be a quick activity that uses 'the page as an experimental testing ground to explore ideas of layout, process and format'.

Format:
1X single A3 sheet
Folded to create a zine.

I asked my friend Theo, who is a brilliant photographer, to work with me on the project. He sent through a range of photos to work with. I sifted through them, analysing compositions, common themes, points of interest, until I had figured out what I wanted to do with them.

The design
I selected the photos where I saw specific focal points. I wanted to use the layering process of the Risograph print technique to highlight these spots. To do this I decided to lay the images out on the page to be printed as they are, and then print the second layer on top leaving circles at for these spots.
I chose one side to be a poster side, and the over side to the the pages of the zine.

The printing process
The printing part of the process was a gamble; you only had one shot at it. But it came out as I had hoped.
We chose teal and gold, for no particular reason other than preference. The screen on the machine shows a preview but the colours aren't representative of what comes out, but was useful to see a version of the print in blue and yellow.

The outcome
We are both happy with the photo-zine as it combines our strengths of photography and design and creates an interesting outcome. The only issues is on the unfolded poster side where the smaller circle is supposed to highlight a person on the phone but it turned out too dark when printed.

A copy of the zine was on the table at Barnsley Zine Fair and it was featured on the laugraphicdes and leedsartsphoto Instagrams.
